Support through challenging times

You may be going through a difficult time, struggling emotionally or looking for a new direction. I'm here to support you: together we look for new perspectives and possibilities – whether you already know what you'd like to change or just have a vague feeling that something isn't right anymore. Meeting you with respect and on an equal footing matters to me – with openness, appreciation and genuine interest in your life story. Whether Vienna is your new home or always has been, you're very welcome here.

Humanistic therapy and Integrative Gestalt Therapy

Humanistic psychotherapy is based on the belief that every person has the capacity to grow. The focus is not only on the problem but on the whole person – with their strengths, their history and their relationships. Integrative Gestalt Therapy is a method within this tradition and is recognized in Austria. The name can be misleading: Gestalt therapy is not art therapy. It directs attention to what is present right now – thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations and what happens between people.

With me everything can be addressed. It doesn't have to be, though. You set the pace.

I offer individual therapy for adults of all ages in English and German, including for internationals and expats living in Vienna. The therapeutic work is based on your individual situation, your pace and your personal goals.

How I work

The focus is on you and whatever is on your mind right now. We follow what comes up in the moment, go at your pace and make room for new experiences. Alongside conversation, body awareness, inner images or small experiments may also become part of the work. If you talk about an unresolved conflict with someone important to you, one small experiment might be to imagine meeting them again. If you describe a situation that keeps weighing on you, an inner image, such as a heavy backpack, can help explore what exactly is troubling you.

About me

I am 39 years old and live in Vienna with my partner. What led me to psychotherapy: my own life experiences and challenges, and the realization that change is possible. This shapes how I work with people – with understanding for the challenges and just as much interest in growth. I am doing my specialist training in Integrative Gestalt Therapy, a method of humanistic psychotherapy. What I value about psychotherapy is honest, direct exchange and the experience of being fully accepted as a person.

My areas of focus in psychotherapeutic support – and what psychotherapy can achieve.

Possible goals of psychotherapy

Psychotherapy can have many goals: emotional relief and stabilization, a better understanding of yourself and dealing with feelings such as anxiety, grief or anger. It can also involve recognizing and changing patterns, clarifying relationships and conflicts, coping with crises or transitions and strengthening self-esteem and self-efficacy. Psychotherapy helps both with diagnosed mental health conditions and with difficulties that have no name – either can be a good reason to seek support.

Answers to what people most often wonder about before starting psychotherapy. If your question isn't here, please just ask me.

How does the free initial session work?

We have 50 minutes for the initial session and it is free, with no commitment. You tell me what is on your mind – in as much or as little detail as feels right for you. I ask questions to understand what brings you here and describe how I work. At the end we consider together whether working with me seems right for you. There's no commitment and you don't have to decide straight away. If I feel you'd be better supported elsewhere, I'll tell you honestly and am happy to point you toward other options.

How do I know whether psychotherapy is right for me?

You don't need a diagnosis or a particular reason to come. Some people seek psychotherapy because of a clearly defined difficulty, others because something has felt off for a long time without them being able to put their finger on it. Both are good reasons. Whether it fits is hard to decide in advance – which is exactly what the free initial session is for. You can find out, with no commitment, how it feels to talk with me.

What does a session cost?

The fee is €90 per session (50 minutes). No VAT is added. For people in financially strained circumstances I have places available at a reduced fee. Please feel free to ask me about it.

Does health insurance cover the cost?

For psychotherapists in specialist training under supervision, the public health insurance funds currently don't pay the partial refund they usually would. That's why the fee is lower. Some private supplementary and international health insurers refund part or all of the cost – you receive an invoice you can submit. It is best to ask your insurer directly.

Do I need to speak German?

No. We can work entirely in English and English doesn't have to be your first language. If a word from your own language says it better, use it – we'll find the words together. For more, see Therapy for expats and internationals.

How often do we meet and how long is a session?

How often we meet depends on what you'd like to work on and is something we agree together. Meeting weekly or every two weeks is common. A session lasts 50 minutes and appointments are by arrangement.

How long does psychotherapy take overall?

How long your psychotherapy takes depends on your individual starting point, your goals and your wishes, and cannot be predicted responsibly at the outset. Some issues resolve within a few months, others take longer. You commit to no minimum duration and can end the therapy at any time.

Is online therapy possible?

Yes, that is possible. If you're traveling for work, away from Vienna or would otherwise have to cancel, we can also meet online by video call – including across several sessions, if your circumstances require it for a while. We'll work out together what suits you best.

What is the difference between a psychotherapist, a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

Psychotherapists treat psychological suffering using scientifically recognized psychotherapeutic methods. The training takes several years and is regulated by the Austrian Psychotherapy Act; alongside theory it includes personal therapy. Psychotherapists make diagnoses within their remit but do not prescribe medication.

Clinical psychologists have studied psychology and completed postgraduate training. Their focus is on psychological assessment using standardized testing and on clinical psychological treatment – likewise without medication.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have completed specialist training. They can investigate physical causes, prescribe medication and certify sick leave.

These fields do not exclude one another and often complement each other; some practitioners hold more than one qualification. If further assessment seems useful in the course of our work, I will raise it and am happy to point you toward other options.

Feel free to get in touch, even if you are not yet sure whether psychotherapy is right for you. In a free initial session, with no commitment, we will see together whether we are a good fit.
